Every emotion begins as a signal inside the body, long before it becomes a word, a behavior, or a diagnosis.
For many neurodivergent individuals, that signal has been disrupted by years of masking, sensory trauma, and compliance-based expectations.
It shows up in your office as anxiety, meltdowns, shutdown, or a client who simply says, “I don’t know what I feel.” Too often, these responses are misread as defiance, avoidance, or lack of insight. When the body’s signals become hard to notice or trust, emotional regulation, self-advocacy, and connection all become harder too.
In this live, 3-hour virtual training, occupational therapist and internationally recognized interoception expert Kelly Mahler, OTD, OTR/L, FAOTA reveals how to recognize interoceptive disconnection, understand its impact on mental health, and apply practical, neuroscience-informed strategies that help clients rebuild trust in their own bodies.

The nervous system does NOT lie,
but it CAN be influenced through intention.
Interoception is the sensory system that allows us to detect, interpret, and integrate internal body signals such as heart rate, breath, muscle tension, and gut sensation. It’s processed through pathways involving the insula, the vagus nerve, and the brainstem, and it forms the raw material the brain uses to construct what we recognize as emotion. For many neurodivergent individuals, daily life requires masking, suppressing, or overriding these internal signals to meet external expectations. Over time, this can erode body trust, the felt sense that one’s internal signals are accurate and worth listening to.
Clinically, this disconnection often shows up as:
- Alexithymia and difficulty identifying or naming emotions
- Chronic stress and burnout that don’t respond to standard coping tools
- Meltdown/shutdown cycles that seem to appear “out of nowhere”
- Emotional dysregulation that resists top-down, cognitive strategies
This live training addresses the disconnection at its source, the body-brain signaling itself, rather than only managing the behaviors that result from it.

WHAt YOU'LL DISCOVER
By the end of this training, you will be able to:
- Define interoception and describe its role in emotional well-being and mental health
- Identify the experiences and environmental factors, including sensory trauma, compliance-based approaches, emotion-labeling practices, and dismissal of bodily experience, that lead individuals to mask, suppress, override, or disconnect from internal signals
- Understand and explain how chronic masking, suppression, or disconnection affects body trust, burnout, and mental health
- Differentiate between compliance- or performance-based approaches and approaches that build curiosity, body trust, and self-understanding
- Apply interoception-informed shift strategies, including the power of belief, co-regulation, validating responses, and alternatives to traditional emotion-labeling
- Describe the key characteristics of body-listening spaces and how they support interoception and emotional well-being
- Explain the purpose and key principles of Interoceptive Awareness (IA) Builders
- Describe and adapt at least two IA Builders to meet a variety of client needs
- Develop an individualized plan incorporating IA Builder strategies for neurodivergent clients
